Barley Hall: It is a beautiful medieval townhouse, once home to the Priors of Nostell and the Mayor of York. Explore the house, you can make yourself at home and sit on the chairs and experience what it would have been like to live in Medieval England.
Black Sheep Brewery: Take a tour of the brewery and discover how award-winning ales are traditionally brewed. You can spend some time at its split level bistro and bar, and sample some ales and delicious Yorkshire fare.
Clifford’s Tower: Clifford’s Tower is all that remains of York Castle. The original wooden castle was built by William the conqueror in 1086 atop a conical mound overlooking the River Ouse. The tower that you see today dates back to the 13th century, with some 17th century additions such as the Debtor’s Prison, Female Prison and Assize Court.
Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum: The museum is housed in an original Prisoner of War Camp. A visit to the museum will take you back in time to wartime Britain. The Blitz, the Street at War, the Home Guard, Evacuation, the Battle of Britain are all covered in the first half of the museum, whilst world conflicts and battles are covered in the second. You can also browse through its large display of military vehicles and equipment including tanks, artillery pieces, aircraft, mini submarines and air raid shelters among others.
Fairfax House: It is a beautiful Georgian townhouse displaying some of the finest 18th century English furniture. Take a tour of the house, pan through its impressive collection of artefacts and antiques and learn about the history of its family members.
York Minster: Built over 250 years ago York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe and one of the main attractions of the city of York. Admire the intricate stained glass windows, explore the fascinating undercroft or climb the tower for wonderful views of the rooftops of York.
York Dungeons: The history of the Roman city of York is peppered with spine chilling anecdotes. Allegedly one of the most haunted cities in the world, torture, pain and ghouls all feature in the cities history. At the York Dungeon a combination of live actors and special effects bring this story to life.
Jorvik Between 1979 – 1981 archaeologists organised a dig in the centre of York which revealed fascinating secrets about the Vikings. JORVIK is built on the site of this dig and displays a range of everyday items which were used by the Viking Settlers.
