Two Fantastic Ways to Experience the Whitsunday Islands, Queensland, Australia

By R.E.Aconley

The wonderful Whitsunday Islands are a joy to discover. Try these two fantastic ways to experience them. Hire a golf buggy to explore the vacation-friendly Hamilton Island and take a stroll along the famous Whitehaven Beach at Whitsunday Island.

If you stay at Airlie Beach, then you must travel to the gateway of the Whitsunday Islands at Shute Harbor. Here you will catch the Fantasea catamaran to Hamilton Island, which takes half an hour if you go directly.

Hamilton Island is the most developed of the Whitsunday Islands. This gives it the advantage of it offering lots of facilities and things to do. The marina is a very pleasant place, with lots of shops and restaurants. It is easy to spend a couple of hours here, before you go to Whitehaven Beach, but my recommendation is for you to hire a golf buggy and explore the different parts of the island.

Driving the golf buggy is great fun and a brilliant way to get around the island. Pop over to the other side of Hamilton Island, park your buggy, and take a walk on Catseye Beach. It is the main beach on the island and you will probably see divers, windsurfers and jet skiers enjoying themselves. The beach has a lovely outlook with stunning views. You must make the time to go to One Tree Hill. This is the highest point on Hamilton Island. There are panoramic views over Hamilton Island and some of the other Whitsunday Islands for you to enjoy.

After a couple of hours you must return your buggy back to the marina and board the catamaran for Whitehaven Beach. On board you will be served with a delicious buffet lunch. If the weather conditions allow, the catamaran will take you just off Whitehaven Beach before you transfer to a small boat that takes you on to the beach. During the October to May season there is a chance that jellyfish may be lurking in the water. Take advantage of the free stinger suits, provided by Fantasea for extra protection, if you wish to swim in the sea.

Whitehaven Beach is a total contrast to the busy Hamilton Island. There has been no building development to spoil this pristine beach. There are lots of people visiting the beach but it is 4 miles (6 kilometres) long, so it is possible to get away from crowded areas. The Whitehaven Beach has been voted as one of the top ten beaches in the world, so you are somewhere really special. The fine sand and gently shelving crystal clear waters make being at the beach a pure joy. Enjoy a relaxing stroll down the beach or, if you are feeling energetic, Fantasea have free beach activities for you.

Your stay will seem very brief but eventually the catamaran must return to Hamilton Island. If you are not in a hurry then you may have the option of returning to Shute Harbor via Daydream Island. You will get the chance to see a few more of the Whitsunday islands on the way. Sit back, relax and enjoy speeding through these beautiful waters. There are numerous ways to enjoy the Whitsundays Islands, but these are two fantastic ways to experience them!
