RYEDALE  FOLK  MUSEUM

Discover and experience the history of the North Yorkshire Moors! Visit the Ryedale Folk Museum!

Discover this gem of a local museum that sits in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors. It has the added bonus of being located in one of the most picturesque villages in Yorkshire!

The Ryedale Folk Museum is located in the picturesque moors village of Hutton-le-Hole. The village has numerous shops and cafes in a very pleasant location and it is a ‘must see’ on any visit to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The Museum is a fantastic attraction in the centre of this pretty village.

This Museum is one of the very best places to get an insight into how the local people have lived and worked in the area in the past. Many historic buildings have been moved and reconstructed to this three-acre site. These buildings have been restored and furnished to show how they looked when they were originally built. Just wander inside them and experience the conditions that local people lived in.

A Village shop, Post Office, Crofter’s cottage, Elizabethan manor house, Harome cottage, Iron Foundary and the Witches hovel are amongst the numerous attractions at the Ryedale Folk Museum. The shops are well stocked with goods from yesteryear. You may recognize some of the old brand names and some are still with us today!

The Museum has lots of unique exhibits. There is a Farndale horse drawn hearse, a Yorkshire Bow Top caravan and an old Merryweather fire engine. Do not miss the Raymond Hayes collection of old photographs. Raymond Hayes was a superb local photographer and he truly captured the spirit of North Yorkshire with his photos.

There are many displays of agricultural tools and the old crafts at the Ryedale Folk Museum. You can stroll through a medieval garth and some cottage gardens. The Highfields collection has some rare breeds of farm animals and some old varieties of vegetables.

The Ryedale Folk Museum will give you an excellent portrayal of past rural life in the North Yorkshire Moors, so do not miss this little gem if you visit the area! Do not forget to watch out for the special events that happen throughout the year!

Congratulations to Mike Benson and the Ryedale Folk Museum staff for attracting over 40,000 visitors in 2007.
