NEW YEAR
Happy new year to everyone! New Year's Eve was a beautiful night with a small covering of snow. Full moonlight and clear skies afforded a great view of the fireworks at the local New Inn and all over Ryedale.
SANTA'S VISIT
It was raining but it did not stop Santa visiting the village on the 14th December. He again was met by Gorbachev the Donkey at the lower end of the village. The Ryedale Lions were collecting for the Ryedale Special Families this year. Hopefully the rain did not affect their collection too much.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE - 80th BIRTHDAY PARTY
The ladies of the Women's Institute celebrated their 80th anniversary on Wednesday 9th December 2009 with a get together in the village hall. The local Women's Institute was formed back in 1929 and it is still going strong. Current and previous W.I. member's enjoyed the party. Many thanks Ladies for all the good work over the years.
CHRISTMAS TREE
Two Christmas Trees were decorated on Tuesday 8th December. One outside the village hall by committee members and one inside by the W.I. ladies, ready for their birthday get together.
TOURIST AWARD WINNERS
We are pleased to hear that Laura's Cottage are winners of the Self Catering Accommodation of the year 2009 in the Yorkshire Moors & Coast 2009 tourism awards. Congratulations to them!
ADVENT CAROL SERVICE
There was a full congregation for the Advent Carol Service at St.Gregory's Church on Sunday 29th November. The choir sang and there were a number of readings. Afterwards mulled wine and nibbles were enjoyed immensely.
PEACOCK QUIZ
On Friday 20th November the ever popular Peacock Quiz took place in the village hall. Initially Pies and Peas were served before attendees were tested with the quiz questions. As always the quiz was good fun. Many thanks to Pat & Richard plus all helpers.
THE CONSERVATION OF PEAT
Rhona Charles, from the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, gave an interesting talk to the Heritage Group about the conservation of peat. The next meeting is in the New Year where memories of ex resident, Robbie Johnson will be on display.
THREE FOR THE ROAD
The folk group 'Three For The Road', Val, Mike and Carol appeared at the village hall on Friday 23rd October - It was an entertaining muscial evening with folk music from around the world - The group played fiddle, accordian, keyboard, flute,guitar and sang a few songs - Everyone enjoyed a few singalongs too and it was a really good evening.
EDUARDO NIEBLA CONCERT
On Saturday 10th October 2009 World Class Guitar Virtuoso Eduardo Niebla appeared in concert in the village hall. He is immensely talented and played many of his own compositions. Many thanks to Rural Arts for sponsoring this event.
CHAPEL HARVEST FESTIVAL SERVICE
The Methodist Chapel held their Harvest Festival Service on Friday 2nd October. The service was led by Rev. Jane Cole, followed by an auction of produce with Auctioneer Bill Hebron. Afterwards Tea & Biscuits were served to those present.
HARVEST FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS & SUPPER
The village Harvest Festival celebrations began with a service at the Church on Sunday 28th September at 6 pm. Following the service a well attended supper was served in the village hall.
GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION
Congratulations to Mary and Roy Siddons on their Golden Wedding celebration. They were married in Meltham, near Huddersfield and spent their careers in education in West Yorkshire. They retired to the village and are active members in many local activities. We wish them well.
STALL ON THE GREEN
The August Bank Holidays "Stall on the Green" raised in the region of £170 for church funds.
CONTACTED FROM AUSTRALIA
This week we were contacted by Robert (Robbie) Johnson from Australia. Robbie used to live in the village during the 1930's, before spending the early war years living at Keldy Castle with his family. He has helped with some names from a 1937 children's photo. Robbie moved permanently to Australia in the 1950's but thanks to the internet he has got in touch with us. CLASSIC CAR & MOTORCYLE RALLY
The weather was very kind on Sunday 23rd August for a Gathering of Classic Cars & Motorcycles at the village hall. From 11 a.m. onwards the vehicles arrived and there was a fantastic display for all those attending. See Photos. Refreshments were served in the hall and many enjoyed 'Al Fresco' dining.
In the hall there were a number of displays by local 'artisans' plus a Tombola & a Bric a Brac stall. A big thank you to all those people that attended, with or without vehicles, and thanks to all the helpers for much hard work. The event was excellently organized by Graham & Angela Carter.

ON THE RADIO
Our very own Dick Feaster was featured on the Yorkshire Radio Breakfast Show, hosted by Darren Harper on Friday 21st August. Dick was chatting about the Classic Car & Motor Cycle Rally. Many thanks to www.yorkshireradio.net for the publicity.
CHURCH GARDEN FETE
The village hall grounds were bathed in summer sunshine for the annual Church Garden Fete on Saturday 25th July. Stape Original Band provided excellent entertainment on the lawn outside the hall. A number of different stalls & games were available for the many visitors. An excellent cream tea was served in the main hall. A total of £838 was raised for Church funds. Photos
DINOSAURS & GEOLOGY
Mike Windle, from the NE Yorkshire Geology Trust, gave a very interesting talk on the Geology of the village and the surrounding area. The talk was mainly concentrated on the Jurassic Period when Dinosaurs were roaming these parts. The Geology Trust are constantly researching the area and are involved with future conservation of designated Scientific parts of North East Yorkshire.
CHARITY TRACTOR RUN
A number of tractors passed through the village on Sunday 28th June. All for a good cause. Starting at Hen Flatts Farm around 10.30 a.m. the Tractors were a fine sight as they came down the main street. This year they did an about turn as they went around the village Chestnut Tree and back up the village before heading over the moors to Goathland. The beneficiaries of the Tractor run were the Pickering & Kirkbymoorside surgeries. Photos of Tractor run.
CHAPEL ANNIVERSARY
The Newton Choir entertained a packed Chapel at the Chapel Anniversary on Friday 5th June. The Choir was in good voice. Mrs. Cass delighted everyone with a Yorkshire dialect story. A lovely supper was served after the service. Lots of thank yous to the hard working helpers.
PUDDING NIGHT & CONCORDE NIGHT
The Village Hall was the venue for a "Pudding Night" on Saturday 30th May. The Marquee was erected outside the hall where drinks and nibbles were served. Soon afterwards those present had two sessions of pudding tastings. The puddings included trifles, tiramasu, apple crumbles and were prepared by our local ladies.
In between the pudding tastings a talk was kindly given by Mrs. Barbara Macpherson about what life was like as Head Stewardess onboard Concorde. Mrs.Macpherson delighted us with details about Concorde and brought along a lot of memorabilia, including a Concorde menu that had been signed by the late actor Peter Sellers.
The Pudding Night was very successful. Many thanks to all helpers. A long walk was arranged, for the following day, for those that had eaten too much pudding. :)
STALL ON THE GREEN
The annual spring bank holiday 'Stall on the Green' raised a total of £200 for church funds.
SPRING FAIR
The annual chapel "Spring Fair" was held in the village hall on Saturday 2nd May. The fair was well attended and everyone enjoyed a delicious cream tea. Many enjoyed browsing the number of different stalls at the fair. A total of £478.24 was raised for chapel funds. Many thanks to a good number of helpers and to all those people that made contributions to the event. A big thank you to all those people that attended. See the Spring Fair Photos.
ITALIAN EVENING
The ladies of the Women's Institute organised an Italian Themed Evening in the village hall on Tuesday 28th April. The evening started with a sumptious 3 course meal, which included some lovely variations of pasta dishes. Afterwards a local villager, Jane Patterson, gave a slideshow presentation and talk about her visits to Italy. The slides shown were from her Uncle's collection and they showed views from the 1950's. Coupled with Jane's knowledge of Italy it was a very interesting presentation. Top notch all round. Thank you ladies!
PEACOCK SPRING QUIZ
The Peacock Spring Quiz was held in the village hall on Friday 24th April. All quizzers were served with a Pie and Pea Supper. The winners of the quiz were Vic & Jenny Worrall, Pauline Slaughter and Moira Taylor. As ever it was an extremely enjoyable night and many thanks to Pat & Richard for all their efforts.
FILMS OF RYEDALE PAST
The Yorkshire Film Archives presented a number of old Yorkshire films in the village hall on Wednesday 15th April. Local places were featured, including the opening of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and footage from seaside trips to Filey. You can visit the Yorkshire Film Archive online and view hours of local films. It was a very interesting evening. Many thanks to the Village Hall committee and the Heritage Group for the joint presentation.
