Two Fantastic Ways to Experience the Rain Forest of Northern Queensland, Australia
Port Douglas is within each reach of the Daintree National Park so that makes it an excellent base to tour the region. It is probably best to hire a car and take your time to discover this amazing part of Australia. Take some binoculars with you and do not forget to fill your car with fuel because this area is fairly remote. The drive to the Daintree River takes around an hour. Follow the signs for the Daintree Crossing, park your car and join the Daintree River Train for an hourlong boat trip up or down the river, depending on the weather and tide factors.
Your guide is very alert and exceedingly knowledgeable about the local wildlife. It is so abundant that you are likely to see plenty of it. Crocodile seeking is high on the agenda for most people and you are unlikely to be disappointed, although a sighting is not guaranteed. The beautiful rain forest surrounds you as the quirky River Train gently cruises down the river. It is blissfully easy to be unaware that the Daintree River is the home to dangerous sea snakes, piranha, jellyfish and crocodiles. Lots of birds are attracted to the river too. There are egrets, kingfishers and many more species potentially on view.
After the River Train experience you take the brief ferry journey over the Daintree River. After five miles you will reach the Alexandra Lookout Point. There are sweeping views over the mouth of the Daintree River and you can look back over farmland, with the sugar cane fields being prominent. When you leave the lookout the road narrows, so be careful when driving, but you will soon reach the superb Daintree Discovery Centre.
The Daintree Discovery Centre is one of the best places to learn about the rain forest ecosystem. You can wander on the boardwalks with a self-guided booklet through the masses of different plants and trees. The highlight is a 23 metres high canopy tower. This tower has 5 different levels and it provides a real insight into what makes the rain forest tick. The view from the top of the tower is well worth the climb.
There are a few side roads leading to some magnificent pristine beaches but the main attraction in this region is Cape Tribulation. Unless you have a 4x4 vehicle this is as far as you can get in northern Queensland on the sealed roads. The name Cape Tribulation originally came from Captain Cook. His ship, the Endeavour, was damaged on the coral reefs near this area and he probably was not in the best of moods by the time he reached here. The Cape Tribulation name is a little unfair because the scenery is stunning. The aboriginal name for this area is "Kulki". Much nicer!
Myall and Coconut Beach are on either side of the Cape Tribulation headland. Take the time to see both of these pretty beaches where the tropical rain forest meets the sea. There is also a short walk to a viewpoint over the headland. Have a dip in the sea but be careful between October to May because the hostile stinging jellyfish are present in the sea. You will have to return to the Daintree River Crossing by the same route because there is only one road to Cape Tribulation above the river.
